We are proud to support over 40 local producers from across Dorset and the surrounding counties in our farm shop. Dorset is full of small scale artisan makers offering a huge range of products from cheeses, jams, chutneys, ciders, beer, gin, fudge, biscuits and chocolate, the list is endless! Not only are these products made locally, they produce a wide range of amazing products and flavour combinations not available in the supermarkets.
Whether it’s a breakfast with local bread and honey along with a cup of fresh brewed locally roasted coffee from Grounded Coffee, or a picnic lunch of cheddar cheese and chutney sandwiches there is something to suit all.
Over the past few years we have seen an increase in local artisan makers and we are constantly looking to support new ventures. The most recent and indeed most local stems from a local dairy farm which supplies the milk to Dorset cheese makers Book and Bucket who make a wonderful range of cheeses including the most amazing Dorset Halloumi style cheese. It is really worth looking at products made locally on your doorstep to save importing in products from abroad which also helps with food miles. Not all products contain local ingredients as our British weather does not offer the right climate to grow some of our favourite commodities, but many things such as cheese are often made with local ingredients such as milk, which also provides a better price for the farmers. So buying local products not only supports local farm shops and stores, but the makers, local delivery companies and local farmers so your purchases really can make a difference to local economies.
Another of our favourite and very local products comes from a lovely young couple who started roasting their own coffee and selling direct to customers at events from their converted land rover. Grounded Coffee have since expanded to include a lovely coffee shop in Poole, which I can confirm does the best cinnamon rolls! They now offer a range of blends including seasonal specials in both ground and whole bean options meaning you can enjoy their unique blends in the comfort of your own home. We love supporting young entrepreneurs and we cannot wait to see what they do next.
For those with a sweet tooth you must try Moores Biscuits. The Moores family have been baking in Dorset for over 140 years, and the current set up is still run by the family today. With the bakery in Bridport in west Dorset, the family bake a range of unique flavoured biscuits with the best sellers in store being the Dorset Ginger, Orange and Chocolate chip, and lemon and stem ginger. The ever popular Dorset Knobs made from a traditionally fermented dough giving its unique flavour and texture are a firm favourite in store, especially when we have the beautiful gift tin available.
